Alexander John Thiessen was raised on a farm in central Kansas. Inspired by a guitar playing family down the road, he got a set of 1950’s Slingerland drums from a pawn shop at the age of 10. Alex jammed along to Credence tapes for hours a day. Alex and the neighbor guitar kid Adam started jamming daily. After a couple years, the two formed The Naked Salsa Divers with Alex’s brother Jacob on vocals and Matt Kaiser on Bass. This band played some good ol’ rock and roll such as Van Halen, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Weezer as well as original music inspired by these artists. After rocking all the way through high school, Alex and Adam went joined Jared “Pete” Gile’s country band and played college towns across the midwest.
A change in direction happened a few years later when Alex decided to study jazz drumming at KU under Brandon Draper. He also studied West African drumming under Dylan Bassett and in 2007 joined Dylan’s Afro-Funk band SUNU. Alex continues playing in SUNU and has recently joined the newest lineup of The North Fork. When Alex isn’t playing his drums he can be found at Supersonic Music in Lawrence Kansas, where he teaches drums and sells sweet musical gear at affordable prices.
